The GIGAGREEN project has reached a key milestone by validating a consistent set of sustainable materials, compatible with industrial processes and ready for integration into pouch cells and scale-up to pilot level.
Selected materials:
- Cathode – cobalt-free LNMO: compatible with fluorine-free aqueous binders and roll-to-roll processes → a more sustainable and industrially viable solution
- Anode – Si/C composite: improved capacity control and excellent cycling stability
- Electrolyte – ionic liquids: strong performance in terms of capacity, power capability, and long-term stability
- Binders – fluorine-free (F-free): enable aqueous or dry processing, eliminating organic solvents
Alternative manufacturing processes, including dry processing via hot pressing, have also been validated to further reduce environmental impact.
All materials meet environmental, economic, and industrial requirements, paving the way to upscaling, with next steps including optimization, pilot-scale validation, and pouch cell production.
