The invention relates to a cleaning method using a solution that contains an ionic liquid, particularly of the protic type (PILs: protic ionic liquids), the solution being used as a fluid for cleaning and/or stripping surfaces such as metals, ceramics, glass, semiconductors and plastic materials, where said surfaces have been oxidised and/or soiled by oils, greases or soil and/or covered with a protective coating. The ionic liquid is obtained by mixing an imidazole diamine with at least one acid containing at least one carboxylic function.
